What is the Korean "double-cleansing" method, and do I really need to do it?
What is the Korean "double-cleansing" method, and do I really need to do it?
Double-cleansing is a two-step routine that begins with an oil-based cleanser, such as an oil or balm, followed by a water-based cleanser, like a gel or foam. It is a very common approach for those who want to thoroughly remove impurities from their skin. The oil cleanser melts away SPF, makeup and excess sebum, but it cannot remove water-based residue such as sweat and environmental pollution. That is why a second water-based cleanser, in the form of a gel or foam, should be used to get rid of the remaining impurities.
* Malkn Tip: Double-cleansing is best reserved for your evening skincare routine, when your skin has built up sunscreen, makeup, and daily impurities. In the morning, a water-based cleanser is usually enough to refresh the skin. If your skin is sensitive or prone to irritation, introduce double-cleansing gradually and always follow with a rich moisturiser.
Will using a cleansing oil or balm make my oily skin break out?
Will using a cleansing oil or balm make my oily skin break out?
One of the most common myths in Korean skincare is that a cleansing oil will inevitably cause oily skin to break out, leading many to mistakenly opt for aggressive, strong cleansing gels that strip away every last bit of sebum. The reality is that ‘like dissolves like’, meaning that the best way to get rid of sebum, which is a form of oil, is by actually using oil. Korean cleansing oils are formulated in a way to deeply melt out stubborn blackheads, clear congested pores, and thoroughly cleanse the skin without the harsh, stripping effects of abrasive physical scrubs.
At the same time, most Korean cleansing oils and balms are specifically formulated to emulsify. The moment they come into contact with water, they instantly transform into a light, milky texture. This reaction ensures that they rinse away entirely, without leaving behind any heavy, greasy, or pore-clogging residue.
Why does my skin feel tight after washing, and how do Korean cleansers fix this?
Why does my skin feel tight after washing, and how do Korean cleansers fix this?
If your skin feels tight after washing, it is often a sign that your cleanser has removed too much of the skin's natural oils. This usually happens when you use a formula that is too aggressive for your skin type, and instead of taking care of your skin barrier, you are actually compromising it.
When this happens, the optimal solution is to switch to a cleansing product that mirrors the skin's natural, slightly acidic pH level. Korean water-based cleansers, such as gels and foams, usually have a more compatible pH level, and they clean the face without disrupting its balance. One of our most recommended options is the haruharu wonder Black Rice Moisture 5.5 Soft Cleansing Gel.
Can I use the same Korean cleanser for both my morning and evening routine?
Can I use the same Korean cleanser for both my morning and evening routine?
While you can use the same Korean cleanser both morning and evening, your skin’s needs may vary throughout the day. Overnight, your skin only accumulates a small amount of sweat and excess sebum, so a gentle cleanser or even a simple lukewarm water wash is plenty for the morning. However, our evening routine demands a much more thorough approach to melt away sunscreen, makeup, and pollution residue accumulated throughout the day. A deeper, more intentional routine, such as double cleansing, is often recommended at night to help keep the skin clear, balanced, and healthy-looking.
How should I use Korean cleansers for the best results?
How should I use Korean cleansers for the best results?
To get the best results from your Korean cleansers, it is essential to understand how each specific formula works. Cleansing oils and balms must be applied to completely dry skin with dry hands, because the oil requires a water-free surface to effectively dissolve oil-based impurities like sunscreen, makeup, and excess sebum. Once massaged in, you must also remember to emulsify the product by adding a splash of water, which transforms the oil into a milky emulsion to complete its cleansing cycle before rinsing.
Water-based cleansers, on the other hand, such as gels and foams, require the opposite approach and must be mixed with water before touching your face. Instead of rubbing a dense gel directly onto your skin, you should lather the product between wet hands first to create a soft foam. Similarly, enzyme powders must be water-activated in your palms, mixing the dry grains with a few drops of water to form a smooth, delicate lather before application to ensure a gentle and even cleanse.
